Helpful Tips to Keep Your Diamond Necklace as Bright as New

A diamond necklace is a royal affair, and it’s a symbol of purity. With its pure white light, it will bring your life into a cohesive whole. A diamond necklace is an investment of a lifetime for most of us, and it will be your prized possession for life.

For something so precious, care and maintenance are very important. Just like any other piece of jewellery, your diamond necklace can also lose its sparkle with time. Diamonds can fall out of their places if you are not careful enough, making your necklace practically useless. However, if it’s well maintained, it will shine like new for years or even generations to come. Here are a few tips:

  • Regular cleaning:

Your diamond necklace sparkles because of the way light passes through every stone embedded in it. Dirt, oil, and sweat can accumulate on the surface of diamonds blocking the passage of light. Unless cleaned regularly, diamonds do not sparkle as they should. But there’s nothing to worry about; cleaning diamonds is easy. Get a mild soap, warm water, and a soft toothbrush. Do not use toothpaste as it is a harsh detergent. Soak your necklace in warm soapy water for a few minutes for the dirt and oil to dissolve. Gently clean it with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Also, clean the back of the necklace. Wipe it dry with a soft, micro-fibre, lint-free cloth. Do not clean your diamond necklace in the sink or washbasin or near any other drains. Use a mug or a small bucket. Do not use any chemicals on your necklace. It can erode or dissolve the metal prongs holding the stones in place.

  • Do not touch:

Touching your diamond necklace will surely make you feel good and confident, but the same can’t be said for the diamonds in your necklace. The less they are touched, the better. Oil from our skin gets transferred to the diamonds every time we touch them. Eventually, this builds a layer over the stones, making them look dirty. Keep your necklace away from hairspray, lotions or creams. While diamonds repel water, oils and grease are easily drawn towards it.

  • Hold gently, if needed:

Diamonds aren’t easy to break, but the metal holding them together in your necklace is. So, don’t be rough with your diamond necklace. Do not scrub it too vigorously while cleaning or put too much pressure on it. If your diamond or gold necklaces gets caught in your clothing, do not pull; gently detangle it unless you want to scour the floor for a tiny piece of diamond.

  • Storage:

Storage of your stunning diamond necklace is as important as its safety. You not only need to protect it from getting lost or being stolen, but also from damage. Your necklace can get scratched if diamonds rub over each other. Invest in a fabric-lined jewellery case with individual compartments for all your diamond jewellery. Or else, wrap each piece of jewellery in soft tissue and lay them flat. Once a diamond necklace is damaged, it’s impossible to restore its original sparkle.

  • Periodic inspection:

With a diamond necklace, you have to look after the stones and the metal prongs holding them. Using a magnifying glass, look at the prongs closely and ensure they are in place and of equal lengths. Take your necklace to your trustworthy jeweller if a prong is broken or shorter. And while you are there, ask your jeweller to shine up your diamonds with an ultrasonic cleaner.

Your diamond necklace is a thing of beauty; keep it beautiful with these tips. Pay extra care and attention to it so that it looks just as good as it did on the first day.
